Happy New Year
January 11th, 2010

y'all !

I wound up spending a few extra days in Atlanta with my family after the forecast called for snow. We were going to head home Monday but snow, SNOW, was gonna fall on Thursday. I am from Albany, Georgia. Deep southwest Georgia. We used to stand outside and practically will flakes to fall from the sky. Many times we settled for sleet but hey, it wasn't rain. I have been in snow less than 10 times in my life and always get excited to see flakes floating and wanted Jack to see in person what he has only seen on television.

So Thursday around 1:00 pm it started....yeah! And stopped. And started back. On and off it went and we finally turned in with the possibility of 2 inches coming in around 2:00-3:00 am. I woke up Friday like it was Christmas and peeked out the window to discover.....a light dusting. I tried to keep my lower lip tucked in for Jack's sake. I bundled him up and we went out to play in the snow(dust). The thing about snow is that it's cold. COLD. The wind chill Friday was down to about 10 degrees and we lasted five minutes. But Jack loved it. The first thing he did was sprawl out on the driveway and make his snow angel. It was awesome, and cold. I just had to share a picture with y'all.

The reason I was in Atlanta was to meet with Governor Sonny Purdue and Mary Jane Crouch, who is the director of The America's Second Harvest here in Savannah. We are trying to get some financial help with funding a new kitchen here to help with our Kid's Cafe program. Governor Purdue is a nice man and loves to work for children so in spite of a tight budget here in Georgia I have my fingers crossed. Special thanks to Alana Joyner, the Governor's photographer, for sending me the photo.

I am waiting to share our new big news with y'all and decided to pull the curtain back on February the 1st when our new look for the website debuts, so only 2 more weeks.

Welcome back and I look forward to another year of sharing stories and making new friends. It's a new year but I will always close my entry out by asking y'all to make a difference where you live. Donate time or money. Clothes or food. A smile. A kind word.

Basically, do good.

You guys do awesome work for others.  It really touches my heart at all the organizations that you are helping.  Jack is so cute!  Glad he got to see the real thing.  We have been “snowed in” since Thursday.  Wish it had been the good kind that you could build a snowman with.  You guys will have to come on up to Tn. when we have a good sledding snow.

I know what you mean Jamie about the snow.  Living in South Carolina- we don’t get much either.  I was really hoping we would get some. I did the same thing you did Friday morning by looking out the window for snow.  At least Jack got to make a snow angel. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

I bet Jack just had so much fun playing. Kids can play in the snow for hours but when you get older 5 minutes is more than enough. Can’t take the cold like I used to.

Glad to hear you had a great new year.

Wishing you the best always.

Hey Jamie,

Wasn’t the snow great???  I just got back from the Smoky Mountains with my mom & family and we sure did get some snow.  We had about 4-5 inches on Thursday & Friday.  Being a Mississippi girl, I have never been in that much snow ever.  The walks in the snow were priceless.  We rented a cabin high in the mountains where a snow plow had to come thru our area just so we could get out.  The views were just amazing and something I had never seen better & will never forget.  It was still snowing when we left for Mississippi on Sunday.  I DID NOT want to come home. Made sure that we made a stop coming thru Georgia just so I could say I was in my favorite state…LOL.  What a great way to start 2010.  This is going to be such a great new year.  I have so many plans for it.  My first is starting a new position at work (Kohls).  I am so nervous cause it is something I have never done before in my 10 years of retail.  I am excited about this new adventure though.  OK and now I can’t wait til Feb. 1st.  Can’t wait to see what the “news” is and what is in store for us with the new website.  Love the photos you posted with this blog.  Looks like Jack had fun making a snow angel.  My sister had always wanted to do that and she got her chance in Tennessee.  She had so much fun just like a kid again. Anyway, hope you have a great week and can’t wait to hear from you again. Tell Bobby I said HEY…THANKS.  Love you guys.

Great posting!  My hubby and I were in Palm Springs last week and at the top of the aerial tramway a child next to us went running up to the snowbank screaming ‘Momma!  Is this real snow?!’  We both laughed so hard.

Thanks for the great pictures and sharing stories.

Hey There-
Thank you for posting..It is great to hear the Deen Family is hard at work making the world a better place! I agree that it is so important to give back to others. I work as a teacher in an inner city area and I truly worry about the children in my class when they go home. So many don’t have the basics like a good dinner, a parent home to help with hmwk, a comfy bed and some don’t even have electricity! This is why when I hear that you and your family are giving back it truly touches my heart! Keep up the good work! One day at a time!
PS. I am from NJ and we got snow too…your son looks adorable!
We are going to the Florida keys and then to Savannah for the 4th. of July and are really excited!

Happy New Year to you and yours too!  Glad to see Jack enjoyed the snow.  I was buried in it for several days so a dusting would have been good.  One of the reasons why I love your family is because as much as you receive, you give.  I applaude your charity efforts.  As it is so cold out these days, my heart goes out to the homeless and I pray they survive this long cold winter in the warmth of either a shelter or a home.

I hope the news is good for you and Brooke.  Single women everywhere will be heart broken if it is an engagement.  Thanks for the picture.  Loved Jack’s article in your Mom’s magazine.  Have to try the pancakes!

Hey Jamie,

Being a Georgia gal I know what you mean about the snow, we don’t get much but we take what we can get when we can get it! Love the pic of Jack. He’s just so cute(must run in the family;)). Hope all is well with you and your family. Looking forward to what’s in store for The Deen family this coming year.

Hey Jamie!
I had to dig deep into my long term memory because the last time I lived in cold temps & snow was at age eleven but it was really neat to see snow down here in FL!  My husband and I were soooo excited to show our boys SNOW!  The snow didn’t last after it hit the ground but it was really neat to watch.  Such a cute pic of Jack and so happy that he got the chance to make snow angels! Much succes with your project and hope you get the funding.  It’s so awesome how much good you and your family do for others!!
Thanks for the blog, thanks for posting pics and looking forward to hearing about the ‘big news’ & the new look to the website!  Hi to Bobby!!
Take care!!!

Hi Jamie, I am so excited, I get to meet YOU! And your brother and Michael and your Mom. I purchased tickets to dinner on May 15th. I’m bringing my daughter, Samantha, she wrote you before and you sent her and my boys autographed cookbooks and a wonderful card. Guess I’ll be helping Bethesda Home for Boys smile  Taking your words to heart the kids and I also volunteer in our local community and through our church as well.  Great picture of Jack, thanks for sharing.  Looking so forward to meeting you!

Hi, we went down to Orlando lst week to a large rare coin show called “The Fun Show” which we have to attend every year since we are coin dealers from danville Va. We left a day early so we could come by and eat at your resteraunt which my wife calls me into the room to watch you guys prepare food on a daily basis. She loves her some Paula Dean and sons. Let me tell you we were not disapointed! The food was great and the lady serving us was so nice. I only wish my wife could have been there but as it was a business trip she wasn’t able to come. I will be back however when we save enough money to tavel back down that way. Thank you for making us so welcome. This was the highlite of our trip. Lee Holley, Danville Va.

Howdy Jamie, I truly enjoyed hearing how much your family enjoyed the snow too! I recently read where a Lady saved a snow ball in her freezer for 30 years. LOL. In CT, we have four seasons to enjoy clothing, sports cars and 4x4’s and lot’s of cool tools. LOL.
I also have family and many friends from the South. In 2009, a few Southern states got snow before we did. We only have a few ice crusts left on the grass now. By the shoreline, snow melts faster with the salty air.
I’m also delighted to hear about your Kids Cafe. I also volunteer helping children and adults faced with various hardships and needs. There’s many wonderful networks that may be able provide you assistance with your project. I’m sorry I’m not familiar with your area. I hope you’ll keep us posted.
I also wish to thank you and your family for inspiring me to try new recipes for my family and friends.

Hi Jamie and Happy New Year to you too!  It truly touches my heart that your family is so loving and giving of their time to do such great charity work.

Love the picture of Jack, he is so cute.  We were praying for a couple inches of snow in the ATL but like you were alittle disappointed in the turnout.  But the ice that covered it stayed with us a few days.  Although with all the cold, I’m more than ready to move to Savannah!  At least its alittle warmer down there.

Good luck with the state funding, we will keep that in our prayers that you get what you need.

Take care and can’t wait to hear the news and see the new website.

Love to the whole Deen clan!!

Hi Jamie,

Happy New Year.  I hope you get the funding you need for the kid’s kitchen.

Jack looks like he had fun making his snow angel.  We had a few of inches of snow around Louisville, Ky last week.  The snow was pretty but the wind chill was horrible for a few days.

Keep us posted on your big news and ask Bobby to leave us a message on the blog sometime.

Hey Jamie, I am a retired Canadian Chef having had my own restaurant for 30 years. I was forced to retire because of breast cancer. When I cook at home I always cook for 20. Which gave me a great idea. In our town there are quite a few seniors, unwed moms and Dads who cannot afford to eat properly. I pool all of the different groups monies that they receive each month, create a balanced menu with all the food groups.I teach them how to shop wisely. Then we spend 3 days in my home cooking up healthy meals that can be kept frozen till needed. Each group goes home with enough food for a month for the freezer. They stay well fed and healthy and love the experience It makes them feel special and shows them that you can shop a balanced diet if you are taught how., and learning how to cook healthy and inexpensively gives them the tools to get through the rough patches. I am spending until end of March with my husband on Tybee Island , and we are looking forward to eating at yours and your Uncle Bubbas restaurant. We love you all in Canada and follow all your mom’s cooking shows. I identify with her more than I can say. Blessings to all of your families throughout 2010

Jack is getting to be such a big boy now, how cute is he making that snow angel! Glad to hear all of you had fun.

Ok, glad you said that was the Governor, because for a moment’s glance I thought it was Ed Asner you were standing next to. But my eyes are old and I didn’t have my glasses on! wink
